The days of the old-fashioned optical Finderscope are numbered I'd say.
As Michael says, you don't need them even now - provided you are prepared to spend a bit of money.
A decent GOTO system on an accurate mount along with PC control, T-Point. and an imager This gives you professional class pointing to the sub arc-minute. If the electronics/software go haywire, park the scope to a known location, reboot , move the scope and do a platesolve. Bingo.
Bet the Kecks don't have a finderscope...
