Constructing a dob was created by michaeloconnell
Hi,
I'm planning to construct a dob (mirror arriving in a couple of days) and am in the process of designing the scope. However, I'd like to keep it relatively compact and lightweight in so far as reasonable, but sturdy at the same time.
I'm wondering: does anyone know where I could get carbon fibre tubes of approx 1" in diameter?
Cheers,

Hi Mike.
Fair play to you.
Do you mind me asking what do you want to use them for?

Sorry, I should elaborate...I plan to use them for the truss between the base and the secondary cage...a bit like
this dob
What I plan to do is to have either a 6-element or 8-element truss. However, each element would need to be approx 1.5m long. Therefore, I plan to divide each element into three (i.e. approx 500mm long) with connectors at each end so that each element can be put together fairly easily but keep it rigid.
Make sense?

Mike.
I was thinking about building a DOB for time a few months back
and I had the idea (because I work everyday with the stuff!) of using Wavin waste 32mm Abs 3m Pipe.
ie.wavin.com/master/master.jsp?FOLDER%3C...dle_product_detail_I
Simply because it is light, strong and has a plethora of joiners,
connectors, angle pieces etc to make something like a truss system for a Dob.
I remember this guy made a bino viewing chair out of it
You can check the Wavin site for all the different systems

It would be the dream material alright Frank, in terms of sourcing parts and workability. My concern though would be rigidity as it would have a low stiffness value in comparison to aluminium or carbon fibre.
