Just remember a compass will not point to polaris. It will point to the magnetic north, and the magnetic north and true north are different.

Thats very true but i'll be closer to celestial north then just guessing.

That is the same the way the GPS Telescopes work. You have to train the to find true north.

Or use those scales given on some maps that tell you the offset between true north and that given on the compass.

If you are looking for just a rough way of finding north from your house, look up your location on Google Maps and you'll know what way to look for north. It will always be the same, so you only need to do it once and that's all you need to remember, just point your scope somewhere roughly in that direction each time

One method i know is possible but have not tried is mounting my SKyScout on top of my scope.

Carl you should know................if i attach the scout to the screws on top of my 90EQ and tell it to locate polaris................(assuming im pointing the polar axis roughly N)

When it finds Polaris.....................the polar axis should line up?

Something to try.

PJ, lock the drive in the north facing setting, and using the widest field EP centre Polaris by moving the whole mount (or micro-adjustments on the mount if it has them). The further away the reference point for true north the better and you won't get further away than Polaris.

Btw, leave the bugger in the flat alone, he'll only want you to do a chart to tell the future when you mention astronomy anyway  .

Down with vwls.

True that will work if you can see polaris if not press locate button sorted
