thanks guys. just ordered the 400D, and the Sigma 80-300 lens. Was pretty sure of the camera, but just there and then decided to get the lens on your recommendations, with very little research, so you'd all better be right....
Seriously though, from the little research ive done on reviews and prices of this lens and other competing lens's ( lens'es??) it seems to be a winner.
looking forward to trying out the macro function as ive dabbled a bit in macro photography by stacking screw on close up lens's onto the panasonic. results were'nt too bad but DOF was mind bogglingly minuscule with this method.
Thanks for the info and help with this folks.

Yes. The focal length is the focal length! They can't write the wrong value on the side! It's an absolute property of the lens. The fact that the same focal length gives different results on different bodies (different cropping factors) doesn't change the amount of mm from the lens that parallel rays of light will cross.

So, I would only have to take the 1.6 rule into account if i was using older lenses designed for 35mm cameras. is this an incorrect assumption?

Sigma 70-300mm APO DG (Macro) F4-5.6.
Yep I have one of these too and highly recommend it as being great value for money. Great for regular photography too.
You just can't beat this for the price.
