Regreasing the cg-5 was created by Jononeill
Iv just started to strip down my cg5 mount to re grease it with super lube grease to help the mount perform better under cold weather. Has anyone here ever attempted this on a cg5?

Jonathan, I did it on mine some time ago, and used a white lithium grease which certainly made the gears run smoothly. Get rid of as much of the black grease as you can, I'm sure it will run well in the colder nights ahead.

I stripped down a couple of CG11s and freed up the needle bearings that support the shafts - the old grease had hardened like varnish and seized up all movement. These needed to be soaked in diesel or kerosene over night to remove all the caked on gunk. After that I re-greased with a low-temperature graphite loaded grease and everything moved beautifully after that.

I regreased my old cg5 a couple of years back. The trick is get all the old grease out and replace (sparingly) with a good quality grease as described by Phil and Keith.

Just don't expect miracles. Regreasing helps but it won't make a massive difference and you could get yourself into worse trouble if you don't get the gear meshing right when you put it all back together.

To be honest, if it works ok before then i'd be inclined to leave well enough alone.

It never ceases to amaze me, celestron and meade spend millions developing these advanced goto scopes and they can never seem to get something as simple as the greese right.
