Aye, but what of this incessant bad weather?
Coupled with the fact you'd have to have a decent viewing
site in your backyard to begin with.
It may end up being an ornament.
The mid - large Obsession (and Obsession like) range
break down quite quickly for their size and
as long as you have the means to carry / store the thing
it really is a great all rounder for the country we live in.
I've thought seriously about the logistics involved
with transporting an UC scope up to the likes of Mt Tiede
for a week.
Or over to the Range of the Awful Hand etc.
For its size and compact nature it would be very doable.
At the end of the day it's got to be a compromise.
You'd have to look objectively at where and when you use it the most
and select your choice based on that.
For me, I wont be doing much travelling for a while so
that's why I'm leaning back t'words the traditional design dob.
As for the current prices,
I'm 100% they are going to drop further as this recession deepens.
The only real issue will be if it deepens too much
will we be able to justify spending hard to come by cash on
luxuries such as scopes?
Time will tell I guess.
The big-Dob-in-a-roll-off-shed though, now we're talking....

The lite scope is a nice setup, if your goal is to have a scope that you can carry onto a plane.
This might sound like aperture snobbery but a 12" is just that bit bit too small really when you consider the effort involved, if you're going to carry a scope abroad you might aswell make it a large aperture, the 15UC would be a minimum, possibly the 18 if you could get it on a plane without paying excess luggage charges.
For your situation, I'd go conventional, the 20" would look good in your front room.
The mirror box would make a good cradle for Jr Jr.:silly:

Thanks Mike.
I'd say she has a sneaking suspicion somethings up alright.
What with me now always reading 'Mother & Child' now instead of 'S&T'
:silly:
Did I say 12UC?
I ment 18''.
Not to sound like an aperture snob either but
I've seen the power of a 12'' and you are right in that
if you were to try and travel with one then you may as
well make it an 18''.
The 18''UC does travel well and TBH you would have to pay extra
but if your goal was to go up to Mt Tiede foe a week then
thats all a\part and parcel of it.
I'd be more inclined now to look at locations that had
big dobs on site for visitors to use and just pack my
essentials.
But in terms of a scope for use at home.
You just cant beat a big dob.
