yea, it's kinda sad what the cr*p weather does to the mind alright!
Here is the antenna I ordered a few days ago as recommended to me by someone who does a lot of this kind of work:
www.rocketradio.co.uk/scanner-antenna-se...adio-aerial-91-p.asp
Antenna, cables etc should be here in the next few days.
Michael.

Are there any planning permission issues when one wants to erect something that is a little out of the ordinary like this?

Naaahhh...nothing like this.
it's quite small actually - it's only 1.7m high.

This is a nice move into another area of astronomy lads!
I'm very interested to see how this all progresses.

Very definitely Frank.
I'm very keen to to learn from any "Path Finders" on this forum.
I am very interested in Michael's progress - and wish him the best in his endeavors. I look forward to any feedback that might arise from this project.

Hi Michael,
I have joined the club for the radio astronomy guys who are fed up with cloudy weather.
I am particularly interested in directional imaging of targets, like Jupiter, pulsars, etc;
so I bought a secondhand ICOM 7000 scanning microwave receiver, which tunes from 25 to 2000 MHz, computer controlled. I am making up a 3.5m parabolic dish and a low noise amplifier for the feed horn.
I already have completed the mounting. I would like to try out simultaneous monitoring of the Quiet Sun in radio and the new solar imaging spectrograph that I have been building during the summer months.
Best of luck with developing your new system.
