Baader Astro Solar Safety Film was created by Frank Ryan
I'm going to make my own glass solar filter and was
wondering where is the best value for a sheet of
Baader Astro Solar Safety Film to do a 5''Ap scope.

First Light Optical charge £17.37 for an A4 sheet of Baader Solar filter and the shipping appears to be free, that's the cheapest I could find from a quick scan of Baader suppliers. It seemed such a good deal that I just ordered a sheet myself - thanks for making it easier to spend some more money . Mike.

I ended up buying from telescope service for 25euro inc postage.
(also included a SCT to Meade rear cell adapter for just 22 Euro!)
Dave,
Hi hear ya.
I was thinking it'd have to be top quality glass alright.
I work with the stuff so I've a few supplier that may be
able to suggest something.
I'm just playing around with the idea really.
If I could get soemthing suitable I can cut two circles of it
and laminate the paper between. I've special UV adhesive for glass
that is a perminant bond.
I guess it's jsut a case of make one and see how it compares to
the glass less one.

Frank,
Similar to what others have already said, there is NO need to have glass and, in fact, it is best you leave the filter on its own.
For my AP160, I constructed something similar to a cylinder which perfectly fits snugly onto my dew shield with the Baader material facing the sun.
By the way, when you receive the sheet of material, be very careful since the two sides are not the same. One side will specifically face the sun while the other will face the scope's optics.
Anthony.

The film itself is extremely thin - thinner and more flexible than a sheet of paper.
To mount it over the front of a telescope:

Further details on it are here:

I'll be discussing this filter and other solar filters at Solarfest 2010.
Michael.
