ha, so much for starrynight, I didnt see Progress following behind
As for 23.20 earlier, it passed through leo, coma berenices, bootes, hercules and into aquila.

As for tomorrows apparition, it'll do almost the same stretch across the sky as the 23.20 pass, only this time it starts at 23.44.

I observed both ISS' passes tonight and no sign of the progress supply in either. Will just have to wait til the next time, there is a pass on 2nd of july low in the south, maybe shuttle might be visible at that time..will just have to wait and see.

I did however spend a great hour with the 20X80's looking at the summer milky way..Tonight, M22 stole the show, It is a monster.

Cheers
Trevor

What image should I expect with my ETX-70 looking at the ISS?
Should I be able to see any detail or just a bright pinpoint?
How long will it take to transit the night sky?

I really must think of something interesting to use as a tag line!

I've never looked at it through a scope, but I'd imagine bright point. It is 350km(ish) away and you won't see much without a lot of magnification. I'll leave the maths of the magnification and resolution needed to someone else!

How long will it take to transit the night sky?

This depends on its altitude in the sky. The heigher the longer. This week it seems the longest it's visible for will be about 5 minutes, with the shortest being less than a minute. It can also be cut short by dipping into the Earths shadow. Heavens above gives accurate start/end times for all passes if you need to know how ling a given one will last.

The magnification-to-see-detail part is possible, the problem is will your eyes see the detail while the object (a tiny one at that!) is moving! There are loads of photos on the net, including one from Anthony The Greek on these boards, of the ISS passing in front of the Sun, the Moon, below Jupiter, and so on - and you know its the ISS! But, to capture it requires a finely tuned camera taking a hi-speed avi.

Examples:

ISS, docked with the Shuttle, passing in front of the Sun, by Anthony Ayiomamitis

ISS transiting the Moon, by Anthony Ayiomamitis.

Could be a nice pet-poject for you Trevor! Could also be the basis for a theme for a future astrophoto competition.

I tried for ISS and progress at the 00:56 pass last night and although I managed to see ISS through the thin smattering of clouds there was no sign of progress. I figured progress would be dimmer so I just assumed it hadn't shown through the clouds but if people say it shoudl be the same magnitude then it looks like progress is not up there!
