Well, with Aer Lingus pulling out of Shannon......NASA could move in. I wonder what connecting flights from the ISS would be like? Bit of a Ryanair job perhaps......bring your own space suit etc.......

I think the Spanish site is Zaragoza or thereabouts, however using Shannon would make sense as all but one of the remaining shuttle flights will be put into a 51.6 degree orbit to rendezvous with the ISS - this means the spacecraft essentially takes off and heads NE from KSC - after a certain point Shannon would be an easier abort than Spain.

I seem to recall watching one of the shuttle launches and Leo Enright saying the very same thing. I recall him saying that it was sufficient length to accommodate a landing.

I think Shannon is a contingency landing site if there was an emergency in orbit and they had no other choice.
Like the lads above said, the aborted take off landing site is in Spain, although having thought about this and having passed through Zaragoza during the Summer (it remind me of Mexico with the desert) how would you get the shuttle back to the US from there ? piggyback it on some transporter??
