0.5x Focal reducer for 80ED was created by Keith g
Hi all, would this 0.5x focal reducer double your field of view when taking any shot through your scope prime focus?? : I plan to use it for the celestron 80ED, would this be the case?

Keith,
If you can reach focus, you might end up with vignetting and field curvature, presuming you can reach focus at all. It is difficult to predict the results of this, it might be something that you'll just have to try, you could always sell the part on astromart if it doesnt work out.
Matthew,
You might want to try using a star diagonal with the 300D, this can help presuming your scope is not a newtonian.

Hi Keith,
Reaching focus will be the problem. I have a Paul Rini 0.5x focal reducer and even with a three inch extension tube I cannot reach focus on the ED80 and the ATIK CCD camera. I havent tried with the DSLR yet so I dont know. I will let you know when I give it a try. It will almost certainly need the extension tube as the focus point even without the FR is almost fully racked out.
Vignetting will be a problem with a sensor as big as a dslr.

Unfortunately the scope is a newtonian! BAH!

A pity, I think you know the answer here Matthew, you need to move the secondary and primary mirrors closer together in tandem with the focuser, so that the focus point is further from the tube. To be strict about it you might need a bigger secondary also as the light cone will be then wider at the secondary. This is alot of surgery and IMHO is not worth the effort.
