Matthew, the answer to your problem might be to replace your focusser with a low profile focusser allowing you to get your dslr and 40mm eyepiece in closer to the tube.

I had the same problem with my Newtonian. The answer was to use a Baader MPCC (Multi Purpose Coma Corrector). This moved the backfocus out by around 10mm and I then had no problem reaching prime focus with my DSLR. In addition it got rid of almost all coma in the scope.
Since you are in Galway you are welcome to borrow mine for a time. Your 300D T-adaptor will thread straight in. You must have a 2 inch focuser though.
