Just wondering is anyone aware of a gallery of astro images that show what a person actually sees when they look through different telescopes? I would like to compare performance for viewing only.

Thanks,
Ronan.

ronan,
i don't think there are any. it would be quite difficult to do anyway as any photgraph is going to probably have more light stored in it than what you would see with your eye as it is recording the image and your eye cannot. it will by default record fainter than your eye would see for the same scope. plus it will record colours that your eye cannot see.

Thanks Stephen,

I appreciate that the image would be of higher quality than what a person sees, but I think such a gallery would be good to give a better indication of how good a telescope is for viewing.

Ronan,
One place that comes to mind is a comparison of M13 via various apertures as produced by Obsession, a telescope manufacturer in the US.

Hope this helps,

That chart should come with a health warning, "may cause aperture fever"

Cheers

There are a bunch of sites which have sketches/drawings of what people see through the eyepiece. For larger scopes (and comparisons) the best I've found is the Belmont Society (their website seems to be currently down?).

Next up would be the sketching section of Cloudy Nights ( www.cloudynights.com/ubbthreads/postlist...at/0/Board/Sketching ) or the sketching gallery of the same ( www.cloudynights.com/photopost//showgall...?cat=529&thumb=1 ).

Another favorite of mine contains literally hundreds of sketches by a Finnish gentleman ( www.skyrover.net/ds/library.php?cat=8 ). This site is quite extensive and well organized, but all the sketches I've viewed have been drawn using an 8" newt.
