I wonder if each of your baseline images has its mode set to RGB instead of GRAYSCALE?

that worked great on a color image but it won't work on LRGB of Saturn is this because they are bmps and not grays?.

Please go back and reload your four master images and then click on MODE to see what it is? If it is anything but GRAYSCALE, please reset it to GRAYSCALE. Then proceed as above with the merging of channels.

that worked great on a color image
The file type (ex. BMP) is not an issue. I suspect the MODE on these images is not set to MONOCHROME.but it won't work on LRGB of Saturn is this because they are bmps and not grays?.
Please go back and reload your four master images and then click on MODE to see what it is? If it is anything but GRAYSCALE, please reset it to GRAYSCALE. Then proceed as above with the merging of channels.
