Dumbell Nebula from Waterford (25/09/07) was created by wellbuttie
Greetings All.....

Got a run at some imaging this week, last Tuesday in fact.... Despite having to Discard most of the Frames I took (and the nearly full Moon!!!) I managed to get The Dumbbell Nebula (also known as Messier 27, M 27, or NGC 6853) in the Vulpecula constellation. I used an Antares Light Pollution Filter, which I think helped surpress some of the Moons light)

A stack of 8 x 90 second exposures @ ISO1600, Canon 350D, CGE 11 at Prime Focus (F10). Stacked in DSS and finalised in Photoshop. Location: Cherrymount, Waterford

Steve just wondering why the nebula has that rippled effect? Did you run a star bloat reduction on it? Good going with the moon looking over your shoulder though.

Great image. You certainly captured a lot of colour and detail there. Now to increase the number of frames. :)

I did indeed run a star bloat reduction routine, Kieran.... Does it cause that ripple effect in general??????

Steve,

If you set the star bloat too aggresively it will result in these type of ripples. I have done it myself and thats why I recognised the effect. Try another bloat with less aggressive settings till the nebula looks smooth. The ripple effect should be visible even in the dark parts of the image if you increase the brightness. Even a small star bloat adjustment can have very dramatic effects on fainter detail.
