"he is also well known for his desire to suppress or hide details surrounding his photos"

Eamonn,

It is virtually impossible to find a photo of his with supplementary details surrounding the equipment, technique etc.

For example, you will occasionally see a photo of his in the S&T gallery and the description will include "Vixen OTA and GEM". Thanks for the great "info" ...

I guess if he does do that then he's perfectly entitled to do so. But whats the point?

Hi Frank,

It is certainly his right to be secretive about his photos but I am not exactly sure what he really accomplishes.

If we all adopted a similar policy here on these boards, what is there to gain?

PS. I remember about three or four years ago when I saw a photo of his in the S&T gallery and with the description being "Vixen OTA and GEM". I sent a rather nasty letter to S&T and one of the editors wrote back to me saying "we even do not know what he does".

Send him emails (assuming you can find his address) and they will go unanswered. I remember seeing a photo of his involving a setting moon (or was it Venus) with a foreground tree and I was 99.9% convinced it was a composite. Suffice it to say my email was never answered.

My comments are not unique .... I have exchanged emails with others on this issue and they (we) all have the same experience, opinion and observations.

Anto,
Its not like you need his help anyway, your images are top notch, un-improvable to be honest, but lets not get too angry about it, he is not here on the boards to defend himself.

Hi Dave,

It is not an issue of looking for details so that I can improve on my technique. When looking at a photo, I would like to have background information so that I can assess and evaluate the result better.

For example, I see a photo of Mars ... is it taken with a one-shot colour camera ... is it taken with a monochrome camera but using filters .... is it taken with a 20" Obsessionator or an 8" SCT .... is it taken with a webcam, a digital SLR, a CCD or a firewire camera ....and so on.

When I see a photo, just a photo, and nothing else, I feel sort of "deprived" ... I do not know what went into it so that I can understand and appreciate it further.

A photo is just a photo ... almost meaningless. Add some details and matters taken on a new dimension.

I totally agree Anto,
Without the images context, it takes away from it..
