Horsehead Nebula from my back garden was created by wellbuttie
Horsehead Nebula, taken with a Canon 350D (unmodded) (I thought I would have to go down the Ha Route to even capture this, especially since I have no Ha Gear or Cameras!!), Sigma 170-500mm lens, at 500mm F5.6 ISO1600

Cherrymount, Waterford

Nice one Steve.
It's interesting alright that you captured so much with the basic camera.

Thanks lads for the encouragement..... much appreciated!!

Frank, When I set up last night, I decided to see if I could pick up anything at all from that area at 500mm. To be honest I wasnt very hopeful, but it was a case of...... well I have to try anyway!!!. If I got nothing, at least i would know that in the future to avoid Ha type targets, using a normal camera (lesson learned).

Anyway I got about 60 x 120 sec subs of the area with the CLS filter (of course), and hey presto the target was in view after stacking (with dark, flat and Bias frames!!! I have to say I was rather surprised myself to see the Horsehead pop out!!! ....... I think the missus will be happy that I might delay the purchase of a dedicated DSO cam ..... for a while anyway!!!

Lovely capture Steve, I especially like the detail towards the bottom of the shot !

Was your mount autoguided? That's great tracking at 500mm.

Keith..
