Dave,

You suggested imaging galaxies that might yield globular clusters. Your suggestion a few days back of trying M 31 might yield the same result as here.

Phil,

The multiple short exposure times in multiple bands like BVR with careful post processing does yield finer detail; hence the jet. Professional observatories like AAO,Sloan,TC in Chile and others are used to aiming for deep long exposures on galaxies which ultimately saturate cores with these overexposures. If you know the dominant emissions (elements) coming from a galaxy, then there is the opportunity of selecting specific filters that will bring out conspicuously those emissions. Of course photometric filters are somewhat narrower than the broader RGB filters, thus requiring multiple longer exposures. This doesn't neccessarily mean overexposed images.
