Eamonn,

In looking at your result, it screams for non-linear stretching. Excuse me for asking me but has it been done?

Here is my effort involving M13 from last year and I am sure yours could be the same or better: www.perseus.gr/Astro-DSO-NGC-6205.htm ... if you click on the image, you will get a larger version.

Carl,

I did an unusually long exposure of 20 minutes of M 51. Got an interesting result which has shown definitely a lot more detail then some experimental short ones. In particular some discernable detail of dust lanes connecting what appears to be connected between the two galaxies. I've never seen this before. I'll upload this image in due course.

Carl, give me a ping before you come. You'll probably need directions as I am off the beaten track, a rather remote area of the countryside, hence the very dark skies.

Michael, I never tried that before. I will be able to do that process. BTW, what's the purpose of different exposures and then combining them?

Anthony, you're right, I didn't do non linear stretching this time. I have done it on most of the other previous images.

Anyway, glad you all found it an interesting image.
I normally do multiband filter imaging up to recently to yield more emission detail within the core of galaxies. However, the filter wheel is off the big telescope and on the 0.4m at the moment for long duration occultation work this June and July, in particular for the first occulattion of the very strange world of 2003 EL61 with it's little moon. It won't be transiting or occulting again for at least another century.

A good indept image there Eamonn.
These for me are the most spectacular objects in the sky and are probabily the most difficult to image interms of getting the entire cluster in.
Nice one ! :)

I’ve seen the image on webtreatz and the amount of detail in the spiral arms is incredible.

Will do looking forward to it let’s hope its clear :D
