This appears to be an excellant walk through of colouring process in following link and some very fine examples. Its nice to see side by side comparison with Galileo image.
www.atalaia.org/filipe/moon/colorofthemoon.htm
Also note false-colour topographic map from altimeter data from Clementine (ie this really is false colour).
www.lpi.usra.edu/lunar/missions/clementine/images/img1_lg.gif
There appears to be some correspondence between deep areas and titanium rich areas (in both cases blue but choice of colour in Clementine is chosen - they could have selected red for low altitude (depth) areas and blue for high altitude areas).
With respect to blue along the terminator I have to say that I'm stumped on that one. I wouldn't have thought that angle would affect what colours are reflected - but I really don't know.

I wouldn't have thought so either Mark, which leaves me a bit puzzled. Can't think of any other reason.
However, you can see a similar colour band (albeit green) on Fig.12 on Filipe's website.

Yea, they are the biz.
The IS makes it great too for these kind of shots.
Took all my images handheld - not bad at 400mm focal length.
Nice capture Michael.
Those Canon L lenses are great.
I thought at first glance it was through a scope.

Michael,
Very impressive result and especially given it was taken handheld and with a camera lens as opposed to a telescope.
With respect to Frank's comment, I think Canon also produces the optics for Takahashi and that is a statement in itself! (I may have it the other way around, namely that Takahashi produces the optics for Canon but either way these two companies are intricately involved with one producing the optics for the other).
Anthony.
