I usually focus on a target on the horison, or a comms light tower on a nearby hill.
Looking at your image, I have to say that to me it looks shorter then 30 seconds, I'd bet you could put your images through photoshop and enhance the levels/contrast a little. I can whip up a release cable for you if you like.
Cant beat a dark site, and yours certainly looks the biz.
As for 350D, mine's one of the original 300D's, still working after all these years.
