If cost is a worry then buying an OAG and illuminated reticle can be an expensive first step.
A webcam/LPI and a bracket for piggy-backing your Canon might be a cheaper alternative. The software for tracking with a webcam is free.

Dave
THe only guider woth its socks is the Lumicon Giant easy guider. I use it for my long exposure stuff along with its reducing lens which gives no vignetting at f/6. It's damn easy to use and v robust.

Dave,
I was just reading the MAPUG database and they say the exact same thing.
Now to find one at a reasonable price.

This is interesting. I Hadnt thought of that. A webcam coupled with any old guidescope would be dirt cheap. James do you know what that software is called?
Regards and Clear Skies,
Dave.

I use GuideDog from www.barkosoftware.com
I think K3CCDTools has some guiding capability too.
An LPI picked off eBay and the AutoStarSuite would be another cheap option too.

James,
I've just downloaded the guidedog software and I'm really impressed.
Free auto-guiding all we need are some clear nights to give it a go.
I've read on the mapug site , that its more accurate if you use an off axis-guider over a guide scope, expecially over longer exposures, mirror flop, flexure and all that.
I presume this software will work with both, I cant wait to try it.
Thanks for the links.
