.I might find that I can see colour better through their scopes and then I have to rule out any problems in my mirror, or my collimation etc. If they are all fine and I still don't see colour in mine then it simply boils down to the fact that a large apeture while good for DSO's isn't so great for planets because its greater susceptability to seeing and over brightness washes out colour.

Time then to invest in a 4inch APo!!

The smaller the aperture the LESS colour you'll see I'm afraid.

Not enough light to activate the colour receptors in the eye.

That's about the size of it (no pun intended)

The human eye is basically a "black and white camera".
Colour is a marginal "add-on".
If you slowly turn the colour down on your telly while the family is watching a film they probably won't notice for a long time.

(Note the way we can slowly boil frogs alive by heating the water gently.
The frog is too stupid to notice that it is being slowly boiled.)

"Schindler's List" had flashes of colour to remind the audience that the film was in black and white.

I'm seeing Mars and Saturn as almost pure white too and I'm using a 12 inch reflector.

That could just be coincidence of something else, but seeing I also have a 12" Dob, I can tell you, on a clear night, Saturn has colour, and cloud bands. Factors to think about are collimation and seeing conditions. If you're viewing with both of these factors unfavourable, then you're going to miss out.
