It does seem a very rare club Dave, but if I were its chairperson (The Mercury Watchers Club), and I charged even just €10 annual membership fee for the population of Earth (8 billion -> 8,000,000,000,000,000?), that nets me - sorry, the club - about €8,000 million a year...
...€10 is alright for membership, isn't it?

Hi,
I don't know where the 1% figure for people who had seen Mercury came from. That works out at 65 Million people!
Last week I gave two (non-astronomers) in work accurate charts for finding Mercury, but both failed to notice it. They are not complete novices as they observed the ISS before.
