Just to let the web team know that the IFAS committee has approved the use of the Paypal system for receiving donations AND that the committee wants Google adds on the front page. Seanie as part of the webteam said that this system is very customizable so is safe from material we would not like to have on the site. These decisions were taken as IFAS needs revenue in order to go further.
As for how it looks, it will be reviewed in the IFAS meeting at the WSP2007, but we really need this done well before then so we'll have enough time to properly appraise it, what do you think ?

I think the google adds are a terrible idea and it would have been nice to have been told that this was on the agenda. Not everyone can make it to the meetings so it's a bit unfair on the rest of us to just rush stuff through like this. Personally I feel annoyed to have IFAS do it's business like this.

Anyhow, it will of course be done when I get a chance. Seanie, I'll probably be on to you about how to customise the ads so they don't look any more annoying ugly and crappy than they have to.

Full minutes will be issued in due course. The adverts came under IFAS membership dues and hosting costs etc, rather than a specific item per se.
However, the Web Team have alot of flexibility with how the ads are to be incorporated into the the site (style, location, size etc).

Advertising was on the cards, it was originally proposed that we leave the google adds until latter on in the year, but the majority of the committee felt that there was no point in waiting and since we had a web team member there who felt it was do-able and safe, then it was passed.
The point of them looking bad was raised, so it was decided that if it basically looked crap, then they'd be pulled down,
So Bart, if you had been there it would not have made any difference.
I knew you wouldn't be happy about this and I said as much at the meeting, not all of the committee are on this site and we did urge those who aren't to come on board.
sorry Bart, I know you're not happy with this, it was not done irregardless of your opinion of it.

This place is a democracy so you have to take the good with the bad!

Besides, the fact that it's a trial rather than a permanent commitment seems fair. Be interesting to see how much (or as I fear) little we get from the ads. Anyhow, I have the noscript plugin set up so I never see Google ads so I won't have to look at them anyhow :)

Mind you, the more people the start doing that the less money we'll make off the ads and the more pointless they become. I have a feeling the days of companies throwing cash after ads are gone. Time will tell!

Bart.

We have a google ads banner on the EAAS website forum and I hate it. It takes up so much space that the login logout button is squeezed to the top of the page. I would assume that the google guys specify a minimum banner size for each page displayed so page info will be reduced. OK, funds are needed and I will lay my trust with the web guys but beware the reaper. I take it we have no control on ad content? The EAAS banner has some astro stuff and the rest is bull.
