Those two posts last night... was created by albertw
Hi,

There were a couple of, shal we say, non astronomical posts posted last night. I've deleted both topics and changed the permissions on those forums to match the others. This should stop automated spam like this.

Cheers,
~Al

Bart/Al, do either of you know if phpBB allows you to send activation codes. I've seen this on other forums;

e.g. When someone registers, they have to use a real email address. They are then emailed a link which they need to click to activate their account before they're allowed to post to the forum.

Not sure if phpBB has this functionality built in - But there could be a hack out there for it?

[edit]
Just checked - I think it's the 'Enable account activation' option under the 'General Admin / Configuration' section of the control panel

PhpBB does indeed have this functionality and it has ALWAYS been on!

Hence our spammer friends register accoutns but they never get activated. The spam got in last night because the boards it was posted to allowed non-members to post, that has now changed so they won't get in that way again!

Bart already answered, but on this specific point

As in typekey? Not much point since most users would register with the site they use regularly, typekey is really to let you post comments on blogs that you might only visit once and not bother/want to register for.

I've typekey turned on for the www.southdublinastronomy.org blog/news so if you are registered with typekey you can post comments, otherwise they need to be approved by me. Overnight it got 7 comments about online poker playing so i needed to turn it on :-/

Cheers,
~Al
