Hi all

Having never seen an aurora I am looking forward to catching my first one. I have a few questions however.

1st Being in Kerry, will the auroral oval have to reach down to my location in order for me to see it
2nd ....Will the moonlight block out all but the strongest activity....
3rd What level of activity (colour) should the oval be in order to see activity. I am looking at www.dan.sp-agency.ca/www/rtoval.htm

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Cheers
Trevor

yes that G1 at the minute is still the after affect of the big M8 flare that hit the other day. So there is another on the way aswell, etimated time of impact around 8 or 9.

Hi Trevor,
yes, even in Kerry, you should be able to see it. Should because for the most part, Ireland covers such a small part of the lgobe, that if its seen up north, then it should be seen down south. However, things like spikes and colour may appear different between locations of a greater distance apart in Ireland.

The Moonlight will not block it all out, mostly because the auroral activity will lie towards the northern horizons, the Moon will be high in the south, and set towards the west. It would be a different story if it were a full Moon. But, despite any moonlight, if the aurora is a good one, you WILL notice its difference to the moonlight!

And lastly, the brighter the areas in the oval, the more intense the activity is!

Hope this is of help! And keep the fingers crossed. Down where you are, if you get to see the aurora from a dark, unlight poluted location, it might give you a nice treat!

IIA. Geophysical Activity Summary 15/2100Z to 16/2100Z:The geomagnetic field was at quiet to minor storm levels with aperiod of major storm conditions between 16/0300 UTC and 0600 UTC. Solar wind speed at ACE has been steadily decreasing fromapproximately 800 km/s to 550 km/s by the end of the period. The Bzcomponent of the IMF has remained south between -1 nT and -10 nTduring this reporting period. The greater than 2 MeV electron fluxat geosynchronous orbit was high today.IIB. Geophysical Activity Forecast: The geomagnetic field isexpected to be unsettled to active with an isolated minor stormperiod possible on 17 May due to a recurrent coronal hole high speedstream becoming geoeffective. Quiet to unsettled conditions areexpected on 18 and 19 May.
