You can also calculate the final cost by adding 4.3% duty onto the value of the goods. You then add up the value of the goods, the duty, shipping and insurance plus a customs clearance charge (my guess would be 20 or 30 quid) then whack on 21% VAT.

Eh ... ( Cost + shipping + insurance = total landed value ) add 4.2% of total landed value as customs duty , then add total landed value and duty , then get 21% VAT on that total.... Damn ....

The customs duty is charged on all costs incurred up to point of import :(

plus a customs clearance charge

-

I'm not sure if this charge is includable in the landed value also ? I think not. :)

Either way - it's expensive.......

Denis - you're right - that's what I paid on the AP1200. Well, actually, didn't pay. Customs weren't interested in it when they saw 'keypad' on the manifest and dismissed it as computer equipment.

The clearance charge is the fee paid to the shipping company for facilitating customs clearance and collecting the VAT from you. That wasn't dutiable but I did pay VAT on it...

Hi

If you can have it shipped to the UK and passed by hand from there you might be able to avoid the charges.

Even drive over on the ferry and make a daytrip out of it...

When I bought my scope a few years back I did contemplate getting the ferry over with the car to bring the scope back, at the time the ferry was mad expensive, because of the car.
