In May 2004, to commemorate the boards first anniversary IFAS held the first Irish Astronomer of the Year competition. The overwhelming majority of votes went to John Flanery for his work with SDAS, Arcturus and the Binocular Observing Handbook. Though I suspect a few votes were cast in the hope that he might not show any more aurora slides if he won!

Its now time to gather your nominations for the Irish Astronomer of the Year 2005. As with last year, there is no prize, just the honourable title which you will be frequently referred to on the board!

The voting is simple. Just PM me your vote before 20th December. I’ll announce the winner shortly after that!

So get nominating!

Excellent stuff!

You should probably make an announcement about this Al so that people who haven't been following this thread will hear about it too.

Hi,

Sorry this took a little longer to get around to than planned!

Anyway after counting the votes I can tell you that there were lots of them! Among the nominations in no particular order were John McConnell, Michael O'Connell, Dave McDonald, Conor .

Martin McKenna however narrowly won out. Martin got votes for his tireless observing, at times clouds dont seem to get in the way! And for sheer dedication.

Thanks to everyone who voted. It was very close and every vote counted!

Cheers,
~Al
