Just got the following e-mail:
Astronomy Ireland Chairman, David Moore ( www.astronomy.ie/dmbio.html ), will be on RTE 2 television this Thursday June 1 around 5:55pm to explain why anyone in Ireland thinking of going to university really must be thinking of taking a degree in astronomy or nothing at all!
Yes, it really is that simple and about 100 billion euro a year is at stake to Ireland's economy! It's a crisis that is looming and astronomy CAN save the Celtic Tiger. Tune in or set your video for more.
Thinking of studying astronomy? For details of AI's October Evening Classes and EVERY astronomy degree course for full time students in Ireland see www.astronomy.ie and click "Study Astronomy" in the left-hand side menu.
Well with a description like that I guess we all should tune in. It is our country's future we're talking about like! Think it's only on for about 5 minutes anyway. At the very least it should be... interesting!

Given that Ireland's gross national product in 2004 was €122 billion, losing 100 billion per year seems a little unlikely. An extinction event perhaps?

No, but he ends up getting 5 minutes of free advertising on RTE which is the point I'd imagine.
