I'm sure you acted responsibly and bought a model that won't do anyone any harm :)

Besides, if the FBI knock on your door in Balbriggan you can always call the cops - US enforcement officers have no jurisdiction here and no right to talk to or accost anybody except on embassy grounds.

They can in the presence of an Irish Army liason officer :-)

The Army has very limited jurisdiction outside DOD property and none over unarmed civilians in peacetime unless operating in an ACP or force protection role. Any misuse of the 'confusing power' of a uniform could net one a tidy sum in the High Court and cause a national scandal. If you were faced with that situation you'd be quite within your rights to tell them where to get off, politely (verbal abuse is a public order offence).

Going way OT now, but didn't some arm of the US Military pay a visit to either some of the protestors houses, or some outside protests over Shannon with an Irish escort (could have been Gardai). It came up in the media but was said to be correct procedure. Bit hazy on the details, its a couple of years back at least.

Vaguely back on topic I think someone in the IAS told me that they need to notify Dublin Airport when they use green lasers in Dunsink.

I find even my 5mw one can ruin my darkvision when pointing out objects to people. The higher power ones must be a headache to use!

TTBOMK there's no rule against Gardai conducting an investigation bringing non-Garda observers along where it serves the public interest or the interest of the State to do so. So long as the Gardai do the investigating and the observers take a back seat. Whether an Irish resident responds to any casual questions from an observer in such situations is entirely up to him or his solicitor to decide.

The incidents in Shannon clearly involve American interests and have diplomatic consequences so having American observers accompany investigating Gardai would be a sensible thing to do from the State viewpoint. Only the Gardai would have any jurisdiction though.
