Good thread! Some interesting Sci-Fi links on the SDAS web page
www.southdublinastronomy.org/wiki/Links#Science_Fiction
Films:
1. Silent Running ... poignant and interesting how the main character sees the three little robots almost as human.
2. Blade Runner
3. Metropolis
4. The Thing ... (old b/w version) "You mean we're being attacked by a giant carrot?"
5. Plan 9 from Outer Space ... I know, I know ... voted worst film ever but surprisingly good and interesting in that a lot more recent movies have borrowed bits from it.
TV
1. Stargate (and Atlantis)
2. Futurama
3. Third Rock from the Sun
4. Red Dwarf
5. Star Trek Voyager
... and any cartoon with an astronomy slant. E.g., the episode of the Simpsons where Bart discovers the comet (Skinner: "I was beaten to the last one by Principal Kohoutek"). Or the one where Lisa tried to do something about light pollution (Lisa: "Why don't you do something about the light pollution?" Prof. Fink: "It's harder than trying to get a date around here." Lisa: "But can't you move out of the observatory?" Prof Fink: "If I do that, another astronomer will move in. They're like hermit crabs. Look! There's one now!" (as he throws a microscope at some astronomers lurking in the trees). Brilliant!

Mmmmm....
Top 5 films would have to be:
Bladerunner (just such an atmospheric clever film)
Event Horizon (I get scared just thinking about it)
The Abyss (lovely)
Signs (Not overly sentimental for an American film)
Terminator 2 (special effects, cool story)
Top TV:
Dr. Who (old and new)
Torchwood (Dro Who for grown-ups )
Farscape (sometimes I had to watch it thru' twice just to get the drift of what the hell they were on about)
Lost (I know this isn't really sc-fi, it's Fantasy but I can't think of anymore and I love Lost)

StarTrek, The Wrath of Khan (Khan is just brilliant)
StarWars, The return of the Jedi (great battle scenes)
DeepImpact (it could happen ! )
2010 (2001 is just tooo long)
TV
Startrek, orig series (some great one liners, Bones>"what am I a doctor or a moon shuttle conductor")
Stargate Atlantis (good plot)
Startrek, The Next Generation (its a classic, Q is just gas  )
Startrek, DS9 (the DS9/Dominion battles are just amazing!)
Stargate SG1 (O'Neill, great sence of humour, those farscape throwaways are not up to the job )
