I think many of us would have given our right arm to be at such at event. Especially with such a wide range of distinguished astronomers, amateur skywatchers and celebrities all with a common interest. As Carl and Dave mentioned, it is a great honour to have a good Irish contingent invited to the event. Congrats to all who participated.

I used to watch Doctor Who and Star Trek, but they went PC - making women commanders, that kind of thing. I stopped watching.

The man is an utter legend!! He is probably the only person on the BBC who *might* just get away with saying something like that!

Ok heres one amazing story!!

Now before I begin I will not say on pain of death who said this could be. I wont embarrass him. Lets call him Mr.X

So Me and Mr.X are standing round talking to Damian Peach et al. Next Mr.X. says 'When are you gonna be a daddy'. Mr. Peach says, 'Not for some considerable time I hope'

OMG  Mr.X has just insulted this guys girlfriend!! I nearly died on the spot!

One thing you really want to check when Patrick Moore says something contentious is whether er not he's got tongue in cheek. I'm sure he's well aware of the reaction that an apparently misogynistic comment can invoke. While Sir Patrick may not be the Prince of PC I think it's quite possible that he framed his comment like that purely because of the additional attention it would provoke.

Whatever about cookery programs I am totally at odds with the way that soaps have taken over what used to be the prime 8 to 9 pm slot on British and Irish channels. Many of the best dramas used to be scheduled in this slot, now it's dominated by soaps, which I find as appetising as a mouthful of carbolic. So while I don't necessarily agree with his conclusions regarding the root cause I do agree with his point about programming and content.

Better that old people should die of talk than to have young people die in war.
