Images in Signatures - we need your opinion

a recent online gathering of the Web Team and associated Committee Members found that we do not have a strategic set of guidelines in place for signatures. We are currently drafting a set of guidelines, but we would like your input!

Please select your option from the above poll that best describes your view towards having images in a signature, be it from experience on these boards (preferred) and/or on others. Do you think it makes the pages messy? Do you think it is personal space and should be allowed to have whatever expresses you as a member. Do you even have suggestions of your own?

I don't think it's a good idea because it's open to abuse. This site should be suitable for all ages but a minority of users might fail to take that into consideration and be tempted to include something inappropriate in their signatures. That would also mean more work for the moderators/administrators.

Have you nothing better to do? :roll:

Let people put what they want in sigs provided that its in keeping with the site rules (ie no advertising and family friendly). If for example someone wants to put say their seti@home stats graphic in their sig then thats fine.

If someone puts a large image in that takes up too much room etc then the mods can sort that out

Don't worry - as with all online content, there will be a collection of rules and guidelines. Limitations must be in place. These would include the type of content, the size of the image (in both dimension and data terms), and even its purpose, each intended to cover IFAS, and offer the best options for everyone here. It is no different to the limitations in place regarding avatars, usernames, banned words, and so on.

As to the work for Moderators/Webmasters - that's part of our job, and none of us would have volunteerd to do the service if we thought there was going to be no work involved! We volunteerd because we know there is work involved!

We (the Web Team) seem to be stuck as to whether or not to allow images or not, as it is a move that the committee as a whole will have to vote on once brought forward, but even some personal preferrences are clashing against each other. Without saying anymore on the preferrences themselves, it was suggested to see what the general user population (of these boards) thought about having images in signatures.

Personally I have no major issue with images in signatures, I would strongly suggest that these images be kept within a reasonable file size for those still on dial-up... other than that pimp your signature
