Image Processing / Enhancing - Help! was created by philiplardner
Umm... I know this is waaaay off topic, but seeing as it's howling a gale outside and generally chucking it down I thouht someone might like to sharpen their image-processing teeth on an astronomy un-related image for me!
For some time now, I have been doing some family research and going through lots and lots of old photos. I came across a small photo of a grave stone with nothing written on the back... and the image is so small that the inscription cannot be read from it. Sooo... I scanned it and tried to enhance the lettering, but to no avail. My image processing skills are nil. But then I thought - who better to try enhancing the image than a bunch of astro-nuts like you guys! (That's a compliment, BTW!)
If anyone feels like a bit of a chalange, you can download the cropped inscription (TIFF format) from the link below:
ochra.110mb.com/temp/Unidentified%20Grave%20Inscription.tif
No prizes on offer, I'm afraid, but I'll certainly buy a pint for anyone who manages to make sense of the blurred writing!
Phil.

I've uploaded it as a GIF file also at:
ochra.110mb.com/temp/Unidentified%20Grave%20Inscription.gif
If all else fails I can email it directly to anyone who wants to have a go - it's only 55K.
Michael - I think even CSI will have a tough time of this one!!! Cheers for trying!

Enjoy the night Philip.
Without thinking that you have to be a boring camera geek.

I had a go Philip, but really there's just not enough there to get anything meaningful out of it. Is there any chance you could scan it at a higher resolution, say 600dpi or even 1200?
