Hi Phil,
Going on your original gif
I had a go at this in photoshop, and this is what I got out of it.
farm3.static.flickr.com/2344/2078468145_31e48976a8_o.jpg
I dont know if its more readable or not to be honest,
The first line might be "Grant o Lord "
the first words on the second line to me looks a little like "Eternal rest ......" and speculating the remainder of the line "on the body of"
and the third line reads like a name to me "Thomas O'???????" maybe the second name is Meara/Meahy/Meany or something like it ???
and the first word on the fourth line might be "the"
and the first word of the fifth line might be "was"
of course these are only best guesses, I hope this helps. Does the name ring a bell ??

Just like to say a word of thanks to everyone who's having a cack at this! It's much appreciated.
Dave L. - That's a very good bit of guess work! And yes it does ring a bell!! I have two names on my list that are possible matches:
"Thomas G Malone" who died in 1981... but the original photo looks a good deal older in style - it's also a black & white.
The other name is "Thomas O'Meara" who died in the mid 1930's... which is where I'm putting my money. The background to the photo looks like Glasnevin cemetery, where Tom is buried. This is something I can easily check up on with a site visit!
I'll let you know how things turn out if I can track down this gravestone.
Don't let this stop anyone else from having a go!!
Thanks guys,
Phil.

Believe it or not, but that *is* a 1200dpi scan!! The original photo is small - almost like a contact print.

Is there any chance you could scan it at a higher resolution, say 600dpi or even 1200?

Good work Dave!
Thomas O Meara looks bang on
and if Phil already had that name then I'd bet you got it right!
To me it looks like the inscription could be in Irish.
Criost O lamb
or something to that effect?
I was trying to see could I make out Fuair Bas
an the date (I'm guessing its on the long thin line.)
Do let us see any pics you take Phil if you track it down.
