Hi all,

Thursday May 15th:
Astronomy Ireland were very pleased to have astronaut Gerhard Thiele from the European Space Agency as a guest in our office. Gerhard flew into Ireland for just 24 hours as part of a tour promoting ESA’s upcoming search for an astronaut, Ireland being a member of ESA, is included in the search.

RTE appeared with a film crew to interview Gerhard and some other ESA representatives. Gerhard also did an interview for Astronomy Ireland Radio Show (AIRS), which will be aired on Tuesday 20th May on Dublin City Radio103.2FM at 8pm.

Astronomy Ireland offices were buzzing during his visit, with some people arriving to meet him. One young man, Jack Ronan, arrived with his mother Noleen. He was delighted that Gerhard answered some of his questions and even had his picture taken with him, who knows, maybe Jack will be the first man to walk on Mars!

The search for an Irish astronaut begins on May 19th and the starting requirements for application are that you must have an advanced degree in science or a pilots licence.

Here is the repot from RTE.

Paul
Is this one of those degrees you can buy on-line? If so can you send me the link. Think I might apply for the job
Actually I did apply for the job in the early nineties. It was quite funny doing the medical exam for the job and telling the GP afterwards what it was for.

Seven years in college and it could all have been done on a computer in one minute :(

Carl, well done on the ESA visit to the shop. Sorry I couldn't make the lecture tonight.

What exactly is the definition of an advanced degree in science? Is this a Phd? I guess a degree in geology would be of little use for an earth orbit
