Hi Patricia,
As Seanie said I am from Laois, and having spent quite a few years in exile in Dublin, I have managed to return to the sweet land of ... um ... Laois-ness! Although they still make me go back every day! I'm based in Portlaoise and I'd be delighted to help you out with getting the scope up and running properly. Where abouts in this fine county of ours are you based?
BTW - there's a table quiz in the Heritage tomorrow night (Saturday) in aid of the Tsunami Disaster appeal. If you're free come along and introduce yourself.
I also have to wonder why a gaggle of astronomers wouldn't come to Laois (although the collective noun should, surely, be 'cluster' of astronomers, or an 'anorak-load' of stargazers). If ye'd go to Tullamore, ye'd go anywhere!

the first person to tell me the name of the orchid species which has an astronomical name (hint, it's an Odontoglossum ...) gets their soup free

Say Patricia,
you'll hardly have soup down where you are if Shane goes round to your gaff...
...becuase I am about 25 minutes away, and I like soup...
...I haven't forgotten or demoted you Bill_H!!

Anyway, MASS had it's first meeting tonight and the soup was great
My thanks to Dave and Dave. The sky was brilliant as was saturn, M42 etc., and jupiter came up just as we were about to stop. As a Bonus Dave McD got my DSI working on the laptop, but alas the dew saturated my scope and I couldn't use it. But at least it's working now and if I get clear skies again tomorrow, then stand by for my first imge. We had a brilliant night, it poured with rain all day, but the sky cleared to pristine at 7 pm. The craik was great. What more could you ask for!

I can categorically confirm that Bill H is true to his word - plenty of fabulous soup! (well, all the thanks go to his Wife of course!).
Skies in Meath were fantastic and we took tours of the usual suspects though we were beaten by the dew in the end. I also spend an age trying to get my DSI working after getting Bill's kickstarted which severely limited observing time... By the way Bill - the DSI is working fine today but there was definately something dodgy going on with the laptop. Maybe the dew got to it too.
Dave (davieg) got a good (I hope) run down on how to get the ETX70 working and slewing around so that it ended up where you wanted it and in return gave us a good rundown of wireless networking - I'll be asking more of you soon Dave!
All in all a super night - cheers Bill and Dave! When's the next one!
