Total Solar Eclipse 2008 plans? was created by eclipsedan
Because you can never plan too far ahead for an eclipse, I'm interested to know if anyone has any plans for this particular trip.

I see a few options:

1) By plane over the pole (but that's about €5000).

2) By ship into the Arctic Circle (c. €4000 but is the weather not a big issue?)

3) Novosibirsk or China. I see a nice 10 day package from a group I trust into the Gobi for €2500.

Any takers?

Oh, I dug out this composite that I made from last March in the Sahara!

I really want to go to this, but don't know how much I want to pay.
I prefer to go to Novosibirsk to be honest, do you know its weather prospects??

50/50 apparently. arctic is another option but the trips are around ~EUR3000. Some people have been saying good things about China but the eclipse will be very low and the chances of clear sky in that area will be slim.

Think I'll be giving this one a miss

The best weather prospects are likely to be in the area of the Taklamakan desert where totality will be visible. It's not too far from the Silk Road and there's a railway line. Further north of that in Mongolia and Siberia the chances of cloud or worse are higher.

Dear Group,

In fact I have already started looking into the expenses for this eclipse and I was delighted at the results. For less than 900 euro, I can book a flight to Moscow with return, a round trip by air between Moscow and Novosibirsk as well as two nights accomodation.

The price is such that it is worth taking ANY risk associated with potentially bad weather.

By the way, that is a great eclipse sequence above!
