The best weather prospects are likely to be in the area of the Taklamakan desert where totality will be visible. It's not too far from the Silk Road and there's a railway line. Further north of that in Mongolia and Siberia the chances of cloud or worse are higher.

You sure about the desert? The eclipse maps I've seen show the path to the east of it. I'd looked at usin Xian as a base since its well connected and had plenty of hotels, then move north west for the eclipse.

I'm seriously interested in this one, as I've yet to see a total solar eclipse. BTW you realise if I come along its sure to be cloudy. They don't call me 'that grennan jinx' for nothing : :P

Novsibirisk looks like my favoured option since its about as civilised as the path of that eclipse gets.

We can all get a cheap flight to athens and gatecrash Anthony's trip to russia :P

Not in terms of getting hotels it isn't. I think I found 3 in the entire city, and thats after getting a Russian to help look! At least Xian in China has lots of hotels (miles from the centerline at sunset though). If there are other people here going to Russia you should head to China or the Arctic, I've even heard about your ability to jinx weather! ;-)

Care to share some accommodation info Anthony? :-)

Seanie's no problem just don't feed him after midnight and you'll be all right. I'm sure we'll find some 30 stone, lonely siberian, exiled for cruelty to furry animals to share a room with our dear Seanie. You don't mind do you Seanie?
