and the capacity to organise that may be involved.

You can take it from me personally John
that the SAC's committee decision to change the venue & format of the starparty
has nothing to do with 'capacity to orgainse'.
You are correct however in that there are other factors involved.

Many people, particularly from outside the country, are attracted to the WSP because can visit the Birr Demesne and see the 72 inch telescope and Museum.

In the past this may have been the case but in the last few years
you could have counted first time foreign visitors to the Castle
on one hand.
Bear in mind John that SAC is an astronomy club
and not a tourism agency.

John ONeill wrote:

Losing the connection Birr Castle Demesne is a pity.

Do you mean SAC's connection with Birr Castle?
Birr Castle Demesne and SAC still have and always will
maintain relations.

John ONeill wrote:

there will be no real link with the 'Whirlpool' Galaxy anymore.

Yes you're right there John, the link will be in name only.
The SAC committee voted to keep it so there you go.

I would like to think that people from outside the country will be attracted to the burren area not only because of its incredibly dark skies but also because of its glorious geology, beutiful scenery and immense Archaeology (500 ring forts and over 80 neolithic tombs).

Thats a six hour journey from my neck of the woods. Role on the end of the recession for more motorways without lights.

Excellent point Michael:laugh:
Joking aside, the Starparty is only about 30-40 minutes drive north of Shannon airport and about a 3.5 hour drive from Dublin via Limerick (might be quicker via Galway;)
The Burren area is a great place to spend a weekend. Apart from the historical sites mentioned by Conan, there is the unique plant and wildlife, some excellent surf beaches within 15-20 minutes, good restaurants (especially seafood), some excellent shore fishing and of course great pubs ( in case of rain;) ).
