Frank, you might damage the scope with that voltage, it could work forever like Peter says.
Let me put it to you this way, if it was a new scope and it blew and you told meade that you used that PSU, then I think they mightn't stand over the warranty.
Whats the weather like down there, can you see much,?

I checked out the site for the manufacturer of the adapter and
the Weasner etx site and like Pigsme says above,
the scope is well able to handle up to 15volts / 2000ma.
the actuall voltage going in to it from the adapter is probably
less than 12 even though its rated at 13.5.
500ma is just right for the etx series.
I have a surge device that is connected to the socket
(Just to be safe!)
Dave,
the skies here are unreal.
here is slight light pollution to my west.
I cant see east at all
(If the scope was able to work off the batteries there is
access to the hotel roof which has great 360º views.)
At the moment I have my scope fully set up on the (quite large)
balcony which has a great South east to West view over the ocean.
(the hotel is built into a cliff overhanging it)
Scorpio is just amazing! , Jupiter is about 40º high
and the detail is sweet. far better than I had immagined.
Ill postup a few pics over the next few days if i get anything
worthwhile, Id say I will, the seeing is excellent and the weather
is fab!

Michael --Peter,
Just wondering something as i don't know a whole lot about electrics:
Say I had a 12V 400mA power supply adapter and I wanted to operate a 12V 800mA device. What would happen if I tried to operate it with this power supply? Could I do any damage to the device or the power supply adapter?
Cheers,
It depends. If you draw more current out of a power supply than it can deliver, it will likely overheat (although it may or may not be fused or otherwise protected).
But depending on the load, you could also damage the device. The power supply will likely go ahead and provide the 800mA, but at a lower voltage than spec -- which might cause problems with something like a motor (particularly one hooked to something like a compressor) which is cooled by the fact that it is spinning. With insufficient voltage, it will just sit there trying to move, getting warmer and warmer all the time. (This is why power brown-outs can damage things like refridgerators.)

Thats great new Frank, Make sure to get the best out of all the clusters in Sagittarius, my best view of them was in Turkey last year which is about the same latitude as where you are now.
How did the other half react when you took the smuggled scope out of the bag ?
Id say she thought I left my clothes bag at home ''accidently on purpose''
