I remember using green argon ion lasers in the past with an output of about 50-100mW.
Aren't green lasers used in lisht shows (eg disco laser shows) arounf the 50-100mW mark?

Yes they can be.There is BS standard for the use of such lasers. They should be used several metres above the audience. The beam is in rapid motion. The is a maximum permissible power for scanning into an audience which is quite low. All such devices have to have an interlock with a removable key to be legal.

In some of the nightclubs which have such a laser, it is quite amazing just how powerful those low power 'green/ red, and blue' lasers really are. Some can achieve almost absolute clarity for almost 2 miles into the sky.

And here are the test results: your new burning laser pointer easily lights a match, and pops a baloon in an instant. That's how you turn a mini Mag flashlight into a powerful burning laser pointer."
I've got a couple Maglites around here, and I think 2 or 3 spare DVD burners... sounds like a cool way to beef up home security!

You can light a match by scraping it off a matchbox.

You can wave one of these high powered things round and hit someone in the face with it 500m away......and they can sue you.
