The motors do make a lot of noise but that is ok, the motors should drive the scope smoothly along both right ascension and declination axes, there should be no sudden motions as far as I know. What are the normal problems? Should the motors make alot of noise? I have the thing pretty well balanced but it sound like a robot.

Well, I gave into temptation and opened it. Everything seems fine but seeing as it's my first telescope, I'm not sure what to check.

The mount is a bit noisy anyway, nothing to worry about. Once you get as far as moving the motors with the autostar then everything is probably fine. You might want to train or calibrate the drives just to be sure - I cant remember offhand what the correct term is but it's in the manual.
Cheers,

p.s. I'm happy enough with my new lidl snowboard too

If you've fired it up and are able to command it around via the autostar hand held then you should be ok.
If I were you starting off with that scope I'd join the relevant newsgroup on yahoo for that scope cant remember the address but I found it very helpful.
The manual is crap.
Do a lot of asking of questions online if you are not sure about something.
Best of luck with the new scope!

Also check out the www.weasner.com/lxd/index.html site.
If worried about the noise use the Quite Slew option. Less noise and less wear. Still quiter than my ETX 70.

Nothing apart from a blender on 3/4 speed could be noisier than an ETX-70! One of the reasons I sold mine because of the quiet location where I lived, I didn't like upsetting the neighbours and the cows.

I think the motors have been taken from some old Yamaha 50 motorbikes.
