coat the screen with a thin layer of red nail varnish.
I'm kidding but it works well for torches used to read star charts.

I picked up an energizer head torch today in Woodies. It has 2 red LED lights in it (and 4 white ones). Works well for reading charts in the dark.

Mind you if all you are using the laptop for is looking at star charts on software such as Stellarium or The Sky....................just set the software to night vision mode before going outside.
But if it's porn you be lookin at to pass the time while not looking towards the sky....................
well then nail varnish is still an option.
