i know it seems like a silly and obvious question but what gear do you wear to keep warm on the absolutely freezing nights? i have to get a jacket for observing, and im wondering if its really necessary to buy some super insulated outdoor jacket from some company like north face ( about 200+ euros),or i could get a cheap jacket in penneys. im not adverse to paying the 200 quid if its worth the investment, but if i had an idea of how you guys kit up to keep warm i might get inspired and not just throw money at the problem!

(mods, sorry if this is the wrong forum, but warm clothes are observing equiptment,,right??)

I reckon you need to think about the whole outfit really. A coat is no good if you're wearing sandals :D

I don;t think you need to go to the trouble of spending 200 quid on a coat -spend a fair bit and ensure you're wearing lots of layers.

But equally, spend money on good boots and a hat and scarf.

By the way - I spent about 400 euro on a fishing jacket a good few years back - superb. I could sleep in it. But its designed for the rain - astronomy isn't :D

Cheers
Dave

Thermal undies, the best ever invention, lots of layers, a hat or even two hats, fingerless gloves, thermal click warmers. Chocolate, tea and mind over matter.

Strange as it may sound, clothing designed for skiers is very good including ski pants and thermal socks. LIDL often carry such specials and are worth a peek.
