My experience in keeping warm is mainly from shore-angling. Lunarctic waterproof trousers idea is spot on. I also have a padded Crane trousers from ALDI. It's big and baggy, and combined with the waterproofs has kept me toasty by the sea on many freezing nights.
Apart from that, it's hat, hood and layers with a windproof outer shell. Pockets are great for idle hands. Maybe that's just the angler in me though. When handling bait and fish the gloves tend to get a bit hummy after a while .

as i needed a good waterproof jacket anyway i went off and purchased a columbia ski jacket. i can remove the flece inner lining for in warmer weather. its like wearing a duvet. i was out last night( only 20 or so mins) but 2 tshirts, a hoodie, the jacket, hat and gloves, good boots with thick socks, a wooly hatand i was fine. was thinking about getting some insulated hiking pants, but dont think il bother now. better gloves are more important now, as i find my extremeties are the first to get cold and its almost worse than your torso being cold.
Thanks for the advice guys. Its a topic most beginners like myself never consider when getting into the hobby, but is extreemly important so great idea to put in on the podcast Seanie.

I usually just stick on a few jumpers, and a warm pair of bottoms. Last night I only wore a single pair of socks, which I regretted after about an hour of observing! Cold Toes
