Thanks lads.
Grand opening is a bit away yet I'm afraid.
Got to tear down the observatory and shed first.
Then, I have to dig for the new concrete slab and foundation for the new pier.
Once that is cured, the new observatory and new shed can go up.
Some more images of what the dome looks like

I gave serious consideration to building another roll-off-roof observatory but decided against it. In order for it to fit in the garden, I would need to build a new shed, build the observatory and then build the roof of the observatory to roll over the roof of the shed. Needless to say, there is a bit or tricky work in that. Also, it would probably coust a couple of thousand to do it right. In time, we may end up moving house at some stage in the future and it would be difficult to move timber shed & observatory with me then.
Another major factor for choosing the dome is localised light pollution. While my sky isn't too bad for light pollution, there are a few street lights which annoy me when I'm observing. The dome will help shield these.

All things considered Mike I think you made the right choice
for your needs.
Is it something that can be taken with you if you ever move?

Oh it can yes. And very easily too.
The walls are in 4 parts, as are the dome pieces.
They simply bolt together via pre-drilled holes.
That was one of the attractions of it.
It's not cheap, but in the long run, I think it's the best option.

Out of curiosity Mike, and playing Devil's advocate here, but what is the overall height of the structure. Knowing where you live, do you think there's be a problem with the neighbours? I remember Dave Lillis mentioning having the odd tiff with his neighbour when is 'spaceship' landed in his garden!

The overall hight is approx 9ft.
I don't expect too many problems to be honest.
While I don't know the neighbours very well, I do get on with them and they seem ok.
Once it is up, I'll have a better idea as to how much of a "blot" on the landscape it is!
If necessary, I can paint it green or something.
