I suspect the gun is there in the event something catastrophic happens with no hope of rescue.
If its catastrophic then theres no time to look for the gun  .
Think its more for the first person who says 'Listen guys , I'm getting a bit fed up with all this so I'm just going to pop outside to clear my head'

I guess they could shoot out a window to end it all - tougher than double glazing I suspect.
Maybe it goes back to the days of the cold war. If the USA and USSR closed their borders to each other - might have to defend ones space capsule against American aggressors.

The Russians have had a rifle or handgun aboard all their Soyuz flights since 1967 as part of their survival gear - it all dates back to the landing of Voshkod 2, which landed off-target deep in a very inaccessible region of the Urals. The cosmonauts (Pavel Belyayev and Alexei Leonov) had to spend the night (in a freezing capsule) fending off wolves before being rescued - it was decided to add a weapon to the survival kit in case of a similar event.

American government/NASA spends about $9 billion on its space program and this happens?
Nah seriously i never thought of it before. But indeed you cant have one person going crazy and opening an air lock and killing others.
As for a bullet hole downing the ISS.................HELL YES it would.
air leaks out..................vacuum gets in..................crumple crumple. The whole station would be crushed like a tin can.
