I thought ALL methods of combustion need an oxygen rich environment.

At least that is what the Mythbusters tell us.

True, but if you include oxygen in the fuel source then 'Voila'

I can give a few answers... ;)

On a deviated, but somehow connected, topic, I was at a meeting last night where the speaker is only one of a few Irish people to have decended to the Titanic (twice, no less). He compared his submersible environment to that of what it must be like in space on a tight craft. He also said that, at that depth (4,000 meters) at such great pressures (400 bar), if the little thing were to implode, you'd barely have time to notice.

I guess in the (almost) complete vaccuum of space, it could be a similar scenario? Then, the gun would be useless. However, if for some impending doom (think Columbia, if you KNEW if was going to happen), then I am all for my brains to be shot out the airlock.

final thought...I think that US air marshalls use a type of ammunition on commercial aircraft that spreads on impact...or in any case its designed to be less harmful  in a pressurised hull. Maybe thats the stuff they use.

I believe you are correct.
The gun should be replaced with a piece of 2x4 with a rusty nail in it.
It worked for the Simpsons
